Sports Medicine and Lameness
All your performance and lameness needs can be taken care of by the veterinarians of Wisconsin Equine Clinic and Hospital. Our field veterinarians have the training and the equipment to diagnose and treat many lameness problems on your farm. The clinic setting provides a warm, weather-friendly facility where Wisconsin Equine veterinarians can efficiently work up any lameness issue from the simple to the very involved, or work with horses that are referred from outside of our practice area.
Wisconsin Equine is equipped with many tools used to diagnose lameness problems in the horse. We have portable, stall-side digital radiography equipment available for immediate diagnosis of radiographic abnormalities, whether in the clinic or on the farm. Two advanced ultrasound units allow us to diagnose and recheck ultrasonographic lesions both in the clinic and on the farm, as well.
Advanced Imaging for Lameness Evaluations
For more advanced imaging, Wisconsin Equine has an MRI unit that can be used to image a horse's foot, pastern, or fetlock while standing, decreasing the risk and cost associated with general anesthesia. For horses who don't stand well while sedated, or those with lameness issues of the carpus (knee) or hock, an MRI can be performed on-site under general anesthesia. We work closely with an equine hospital in northern Illinois to utilize their bone scan equipment should that modality be most appropriate for a patient.
Therapeutic Techniques to Heal Lameness
Advanced therapeutic techniques are also available at Wisconsin Equine including:
Joint injection therapy
Extracorporeal shockwave therapy
IRAP (Interleukin Receptor-Antagonist Protein)
PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma)
Stem cell therapy
Surgical treatment (arthroscopy, tenoscopy, fasciotomy, neurectomy, etc.)
Pre-purchase exams can be performed in the clinic or the field by Wisconsin Equine veterinarians. Whether you are purchasing a family pleasure horse or an upper level performance horse we offer a most thorough examination to make sure any and all medical issues are revealed. The above diagnostic equipment, as well as endoscopy to evaluate the upper airway, can also be utilized to help you be sure you've found an equine partner well-suited to your desired discipline and level.
