POISON CONTROL: What would you do if your horse (or even your cat, dog, etc.) consumed a substance that may be toxic??
The first thing to do would be to contact your local veterinarian. If they are unable – or they do not have an answer, then the ASPCA has a 24-hour Animal Poison Control Center Hotline that is staffed by veterinarians, including board-certified toxicologists. They are available 365 days / year to advise on animal poisoning, including horses. It is recommended to have the following information available:
1) Species, breed, age, sex, approximate weight and number of animals involved
2) The animal’s symptoms
3) Information about the exposure, including: the agent, amount involved and the time since the exposure
A consultation fee may be charged, but the veterinarians can give immediate treatment recommendations and ongoing case consultation to your regular veterinarian.
Post the following number in your house/barn so it is available in times of emergency:
1-888-426-4435
